ORINDA, CA — A fifth person has died as a result of the Halloween night shooting at a party in Orinda, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office. All 5 victims have been identified:

  • Tiyon Farley, 22, of Antioch
  • Omar Taylor, 24, of Pittsburg
  • Ramon Hill Jr., 23, of San Francisco/Oakland
  • Javin County, 29, of Sausalito/Richmond
  • Oshiana Tompkins, 19, of Vallejo/Hercules

The FBI has joined the investigation that also left at least three others wounded at a huge party with more than 100 people at a home rented on Airbnb. Code violations had been logged repeatedly at the home, including for large parties, according to officials.

No arrests have been made in the shooting. At a news conference Friday afternoon, Police Chief David Cook said it was too early in the investigation to disclose information about suspects.

Investigators found two guns in the house and are working to determine if they were used in the shooting, the sheriff's office reported in a Friday night news release. The county's Forensic Services Division Crime lab and Detectives from the Homicide Unit spent all day at the home, in the 100 block of Lucille Way near Knickerbocker Lane.

The exact number of injured is not known, according to Jimmy Lee of the sheriff's office, because some people went to hospitals by private vehicle.

Some of the injuries are reported to be sprained ankles and similar wounds as terrified party goers ran from the packed house when the shooting started.

Gunshots rang out at 10:50 p.m. in the otherwise quiet and safe neighborhood. Orinda police officers rushed to the home and were met by chaos, as people ran from the shooting. Officers were quickly joined by law enforcement from Moraga, Lafayette, the CHP and sheriff's office. Cook thanked all of them at the news conference.

Cook said, "Orinda is a very small, very safe, very family-oriented community that is not accustomed to violence"

Orinda Mayor Inga Miller said the City Council will discuss short-term rentals at its next meeting on Tuesday. The city already has restrictions on the number of occupants allowed at short-term rentals.

The mayor said that flags in the city have been lowered to half-staff in remembrance of the victims.

Code enforcement officials had received numerous complaints about the property since it was registered as a short-term rental last November, including a complaint in February about large parties. The city sent the property owners, identified in property records as Wenlin Luo and Michael Young Wang, reminders about city regulations in March.

Another complaint was filed in July complaining about overflowing garbage bins.

Complaints were also lodged on Thursday night, when neighbors sent an email at 9:35 p.m., according to Orinda city manager Steve Solomon.

Solomon said neighbors also called police about the party.

Airbnb released a statement about the shooting, "We are horrified by this tragedy and are in close communication with Chief David Cook of Orinda Police to offer our support with his investigation into who committed this senseless violence. Additionally, we have taken action to ban the booking guest from our platform. Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the victims of this abhorrent act as well as the neighbors of the home."

Chris Gade, who lives down the hill from the home, told reporters early Friday, "This just doesn't happen in Orinda."

A purported social media invite to the party advertised it as an "Airbnb Mansion Party" and instructed people to BYOB and BYOW. Airbnb is investigating.
