Acalanes Students Provide an Example for Teens Everywhere

Two Acalanes seniors did their best to put Lamorinda teens on the map, and now should serve as an inspiration for all of the area's teens.

I don't know if it was just me, but this last weekend was a strangely normal one.  Then the news hit me that Acalanes students Blake Marggraff and Matthew Feddersen, 18 and 17 respectively, both won $84,000, the prestigious Gordan E. Moore award and are having two asteroids named after them.  The award was given to the pair for their work with cancer treatment, which may very well prove to be a significant step forward in cancer research.  After I briefly wondered how awesome it would be to have an asteroid named after me, I realized that this is something amazing.  These two students have not only achieved something great for science, mankind and their futures, but they've proved something a lot more.

Good news, Lamorinda teens, we most certainly matter.  I know a lot of you see those really cool news bits where some teen somewhere does something fantastic, but it's a little hard to relate to some seventeen year old across the country.  However, nothing quite hits you this hard when someone who goes to your high school or your friend's high school makes a step forward in cancer treatment.  This breakthrough should serve all Lamorinda teens a notice that we can do a whole lot, even if we're still young.

Now guys, it's our job to make sure that this continues.  If we just sit by and go "oh, that's cool," then Matthew and Blake are just making the rest of the Lamorinda teen population look bad.  Let them serve as your inspiration, we can work to solve humanity's greatest problems.  Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to find another disease to cure.

I'm curious, am I the only one who feels this way?  Tell me, Patch folk, how do you feel about this achievement?
