Rise Up and Rename! Time for a Blackcherry Forest

Originally the Rubbermeister, it's time rename this tasty licorice and cherry-flavored cocktail.

So, I’m still geeking out on the whole cocktail name topic.  Last week I wrote about one of the more beautifully named drinks, but there are a host of poorly named cocktails out there, too.  Some I’ll concede are savvy marketing.  Forget about what’s in it, who wouldn’t want to have Sex on the Beach?  But, others are just lame.  One of the worst named drinks in the history of naming drinks is the Rubbermeister.

It’s actually a very tasty use of Jagermeister, which is a licorice-flavored liqueur often ignored by novice bartenders because of its wide use in shot form to torture friends.  I enjoyed the Rubbermeister so much that I included it in the 30-Second Bartender WTF Booze Guide, a tool for people wondering “WTF” to do with an odd gift or some of those bottles languishing in the liquor cabinet for lack of recipe ideas.

However, I just couldn’t get past the name.  It sounds less like a cocktail then it does a container made from space-age polymers designed to keep your lettuce fresh for weeks... or maybe an S&M fetish bar.  So, I renamed the drink, Blackcherry Forest.  I’m not saying Blackcherry Forest is a great name, but it least it doesn’t sound like I need to wear rubber chaps while I’m mixing it.  This is the first step in a grass-roots movement to take the Goth out of this very tasty cocktail.

Start of with an 8-10 oz. glass, like a Highball or Collins, half full of ice.  Pour in an ounce of Jager and 6 ounces of cherry cola.  Give it a stir and garnish with a Maraschino Cherry and a Lemon Wedge.  The licorice and cherry flavors play together nicely in a fun cocktail with no rubber chaps needed.  Live the Party!
