The Good Old Days of Cocktails!

Retro Rum and Cola. Is that the way you roll?

When Wayne Rogers (“Trapper” John McIntyre) left “MASH” and was replaced by Mike Farrell (B.J. Hunnicut) it took me six weeks to work through the pain.  Then Shelley Long (Diane Chambers) left “Cheers” and they brought in Kirstie Alley (Rebecca Howe) and it was another difficult and dark stretch.  And, don’t even get me started on the replacement of the yellow Wiggle.  I don’t do well with change.  So, this whole Netflix changing how it charges for streaming has me hand-wringingly close to psychosis.  I’ll… I’ll be okay.  I’m just going to take it one day at time.

Meanwhile, I’ve been streaming up a storm, getting my last fix of vintage TV shows before September 1st forces my hand.  It’s easy to get caught up in the escapist ecstasy of “Burn Notice” and forget about a classic like “The A-Team,” which is pretty much the same show only with a cool van. The same is true of cocktails.  Fun, fancy drinks like the Mai Tai and Mojito are very enjoyable, but sometimes it’s good to go back and get reacquainted with the classics.

One such simple classic is the Rum and Cola.  It really doesn’t get much simpler, other than just lifting the bottle to your mouth, and it fits well with my TV lead.  I mean, doesn’t it sound like an Old School, salt-and-pepper cop/buddy show?  Cola, the black, street-wise hustler, begrudgingly befriends Rum, the naive rookie cop, to right the wrongs that the system just can’t fix.  I’m seeing Robert Guillaume as Cola and a very young Jan-Michael Vincent, as Rum.

Alas, it was not to be, but the classic cocktail is still ours to recreate and enjoy.  It is also the ultimate 30-Second Bartender drink, because it’s so quick, easy, and very tasty.

                                                   Ingredients

* 2oz. Rum * 6 oz. Cola * Squirt of Lemon Juice (optional)

Drop some ice into an 8 oz. glass. Pour in the rum and half a can of cola to top it off. Give it a stir and if you need some Vitamin C, add a squirt of Lemon Juice.  Queue up an old “Quincy” episode and enjoy the classics.  Don’t forget to give me a “like” on Facebook and check out more recipes at www.30-SecondBartender.com!
