Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teen Brain

A program for parents of adolescents.

Join Deborah Raphael, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, school counselor for both Maybeck High School and Black Pine Circle School, and an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California for this discussion at the Lafayette Library Tuesday, Oct. 28, 7-8 p.m. Admission is free.

This discussion will be of particular interest to parents of adolescents, especially middle and high school-aged children, who want to be involved in a conversation about the teen brain, education, and parenting.

Raphael has worked extensively with adolescents and their families for more than 30 years. She works with parents to understand themselves both as parents and as former teenagers and offers strategies for communication tailored to this age.

Her research and experience has led her to the conviction that, despite appearances, close parental relationships are crucial in these years. Raphael also works to help parents see how their role as parents can and must change during adolescence – but in ways that preserve strong emotional bonds with their children. She maintains a private practice in Kensington CA.

Also participating is William Webb who has been an educator for more than 20 years. He has worked with elementary, middle, high and college students. He began his time in schools as a chaplain, working with parents and students. He is the Director of Maybeck High school in Berkeley, and he also leads writing workshops around the country for Bard College.
