Police are searching for a suspect who fled into Lafayette after a botched burglary at an Orinda home this morning.

LAFAYETTE - Police are searching for a suspect who fled into Lafayette after a botched burglary at an Orinda home this morning.

At about 11:15 a.m., a caller notified police that a suspect was interrupted during a residential burglary attempt at a home on Wild Plum Way.

A man was trying to enter the home and then ran away when the caller spotted him and shrieked, Orinda police Chief Mark Nagel said.

The man fled on foot to Orinda's BART station, which was just several blocks away, and rode a train to a neighboring station in Lafayette, Nagel said.

BART employees who saw the suspect alerted police to his location and police attempted to establish a perimeter to capture him, according to Nagel.

Lafayette police sent out an alert notifying residents that a man was being sought.

Nagel said helicopters and police K-9 units joined in the search for the suspect but he still had not been found as of 1:30 p.m.

In the latest update from Lafayette police, they said the suspect was last seen in a creek near Hough Avenue.

He was described by police as an 18- to 20-year-old man who stands about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs between 145 and 160 pounds.

He was seen wearing a blue backpack, black shoes, a dark sweater with a white T-shirt around his neck and an Oakland A's hat, police said.

Anyone who sees the man is asked to call 911.
