Contra Costa County Coronavirus: 786 Cases, 23 Deaths

The latest updates on the spread of the coronavirus through Contra Costa County as of Friday, April 24.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — Friday, health officials with Contra Costa County reported 786 total cases of the coronavirus and 23 deaths.

Of the 786 confirmed cases of the virus, 32 patients are ill enough that they have had to be hospitalized for serious treatment.

Friday's numbers represent an increase of just 17 new cases over the past 24 hours, which health experts say is due in part towards the stay-at-home order and effective social distancing. 10,612 people across Contra Costa County have been tested for the coronavirus, meaning just 7.4 percent of tests come back positive.

Child care relief for frontline workers

Health care workers across the county have been pulling extra hours at hospitals and clinics while struggling to battle the coronavirus outbreak. In an attempt to make their personal lives a little easier to manage, the county announced Friday that the Employment and Human Services Department is working on an emergency child care program to take care of the children of health care workers, first responders and all essential workers.

Parks ask visitors to bring face coverings

Five counties across the Bay Area, including Contra Costa county, have joined together to issue a "Cover Your Face" order.

The order asks that everyone visiting a park bring a face mask, and wear it at any time they're within six feet of someone else. Parks say that includes when visitors are running, hiking and biking.

The mask requirements include areas near or just outside the parks, like in parking lots, staging areas and entrance gates.

The order does not apply to children under 12, and children 2 or younger should never wear a face mask because of the risk of suffocation.
