SUMMER MUSIC SERIES AT THE ORINDA LIBRARY

The Contra Costa County Library celebrates reading and adventure all summer long with One World, Many Stories, its 2011 Summer Reading Festival.  Beginning Saturday, June 11, readers of all ages are encouraged to pick up their reading record at the Orinda Library and read throughout the summer for fun and prizes.

At the Orinda Library, we will celebrate the Summer Reading Festival with a three concert series performed inside the library next to the fireplace.  The first takes place on Wednesday, June 22 at 6:30, with Celtic Sands performing music of the Celtic lands.  A popular Bay Area group, Celtic Sands was one of the hits of last year’s music series at the library.  Led by Lara Garner on the Irish harp, the talented musicians will share their masterful interpretation of traditional music and may include stories or a few dance steps in their performance.

Second on the bill will be Eastern Strings on Wednesday, July 27.  Playing traditional instruments, Nathan and Yosifah Craven with a percussionist, perform the classical and popular music of Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iran and Iraq.  Along the way, they will share the history and legend of “musiqa Al’Arabiyya.”  Please note: this performance starts at 6:45.

Closing the series, Yolo Mambo brings a multicultural flair to the acoustic jazz of Latin America on Wednesday, August 31 at 6:30.  Vocalist Catherine LeBlanc sings in several languages including Spanish, Portuguese, and French, backed up vocally by the entire quartet: Phil Summers on guitar, Carla Campbell on percussion, and Steve O'Neill on upright bass
