Groundbreaking Ceremony Greenlights New Outdoor Stage at Lafayette Reservoir

Officials and dignitaries converge to pop the bubbly signaling go-ahead for construction of a concert stage at the Lafayette Reservoir.

Officials, dignitaries and representatives of a local Rotary club gathered Thursday afternoon for a ceremonial groundbreaking at the Lafayette Reservoir, where a new outdoor concert stage will be built at the east end, opposite the children's playground.

Construction of the 40x40-foot stage, long in gestation, is to commence mid-June and be completed before we see raindrops this fall. Of the total cost - estimated at $100,000 - Lafayette Rotary Club is contributing $30,000.

"The money is in the bank," commented John Sherry, past president and project pointperson.

Visions of an outdoor stage have been afloat since the first Rotary club-sponsored Concert at the Res 17 years ago. "This is a dream come true," added current president Geoff Zimmerman. "It's something tangible that our entire community can enjoy for many years to come."

The contract has been awarded to Ring Construction, Inc., of Lafayette. Owner Terry Ring said the work crew will begin drilling holes for concrete piers "as soon as the ground is dry enough. The recent rains haven't helped."

Also on hand for the festivities was the brass ensemble from Stanley Middle School in Lafayette. Like others, they donned yellow-colored plastic construction hats.

Other monetary contributors are the Lafayette Community Foundation, which, according to representative Don Jenkins, will add "about $20,000," and the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce. Executive director Jay Lifson said some proceeds from the annual Arts and Wine Festival are to be earmarked.
