Updated: One Victim Seriously Burned in Lamorinda Vehicle and Grass Fire

The person was airlifted to the hospital with serious burns. A firefighter was also injured.

LAMORINDA, CA — A single-car accident caused a small grass fire this afternoon that resulted in the closure of Canyon Road in both directions west of Moraga, according to Moraga-Orinda Fire Chief Stephen Healy.

At about 2 p.m., firefighters responded to a call about a vegetation fire roughly 2 miles west of Moraga, Healy said.

When crews arrived, they discovered a vehicle on fire about 40 feet from the road and down in a small creek area, Healy said.

According to Healy, "An occupant of the vehicle was beside the burning vehicle in burning grass. The victim was removed by MOFD Firefighters and treated for extreme burn injuries. The victim was transported by a medical helicopter to a regional burn center."

In addition, a firefighter suffered a minor injury.

About two acres burned. No structures were threatened.

In addition to MOFD, personnel from CAL Fire, East Bay Regional Parks, CALSTAR, Moraga PD, and Orinda PD all responded to the scene.
