Lamorinda Coronavirus Cases Increase

As the county inches slowly toward reopening, the number of cases continues to grow.

LAMORINDA, CA — No new coronavirus deaths have been reported in Contra Costa County, health officials announced on Thursday. The death toll in the county remains at 37 since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Statewide, the death toll is closing in on 4,000, according to Johns Hopkins University. Thursday afternoon, it was 3,934.

In Lafayette, the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus is now 27, an increase of two in the last 10 days. Orinda is up to 57, two more than 10 days ago. Moraga is holding steady at 7. The communities with the highest number of cases in Contra Costa County:

  1. Richmond: 280
  2. Concord: 137
  3. Antioch: 122
  4. San Pablo: 99
  5. Pittsburg: 97

In Contra Costa County, some residents have expressed frustration over the slow pace of reopening compared to other parts of the state, but cases continue to climb. Alameda County reported one new death on Thursday. The county now has the highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases, surpassing Santa Clara County to the south, which recorded the first known death from the virus.

In other developments, with substantial ridership and sales tax revenue losses due to coronavirus, BART's current projected fiscal year 2020-2021 budget includes more than $100 million in cuts while avoiding layoffs and furloughs, BART officials said Thursday.

The U.S. Census Bureau is starting to reopen some of its field offices in California in order to reach homes without regular mailing addresses, census officials reported this week. One East Bay office is reopening, in Concord.
