California Coronavirus: Live Updates On Reopening, Orders, Cases
Here's a roundup of all the coronavirus developments in California as of May 31.
CALIFORNIA — Thursday marked 10 weeks since California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a stay-at-home order. While many communities are well into reopening plans, others are plodding along much slower.
Californians reached two milestones in the reopening phase of the Golden State's economy this week, with officials first announcing that houses of worship can reopen with restrictions and in-store retail shopping can resume in many counties. Then, just a day later on Tuesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom gave the green light to hair salons and barbershops, though also with specific guidelines and requirements.
Newsom said the relaxed COVID-19 coronavirus shelter-in-place guidelines for salons and barbershops would apply to the state's 47 counties that have filed attestation forms with the California Department of Public Health, asserting that they meet minimum standards for factors like testing capacity and hospitalizations.

"We're moving forward," Newsom said. "We're not looking back but we are walking into the unknown, the untested, literally and figuratively."

Houses of worship, retail can reopen with county approval
Churches, mosques, synagogues and other houses of worship can resume holding in-person services, and retailers across California can open up for indoor shopping — but only if county health departments approve, the state Department of Public Health announced Monday.
The eased rules, which come following protests from local religious leaders and even President Donald Trump, were rolled out Monday as part of a new set of guidelines for religious services and cultural ceremonies.
Los Angeles County on Tuesday announced it would allow in-store shopping in light of the new state rules. The Bay Area, meanwhile, has kept its prohibition in place.
Under the new rules, places of worship can reopen at no more than 25% of building capacity or for no more than 100 attendees, whichever is lower. Meanwhile, in-store retail shopping, previously allowed only in counties that had moved further into Stage 2 of the reopening plan, is now permitted statewide, officials said Monday.
There were more than 1,750,200 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States and 102,906 deaths as of Saturday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University. At least 4,088 of those deaths were in California. The U.S. has the most confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths in the world.
