The Lafayette Little League 12-year-old All Star team got close, but couldn't push past North Oakland, falling 12-5 at the Concord American Little League fields Thursday.
"It was tough, but the kids played tough this whole tournament," Lafayette coach Dan Ventrelle said. "We played really hard Monday night. We came out here tonight and we still fought hard, we still played hard. The kids never gave up on themselves. They were confident and they played together as a group."
After North Oakland took a 2-0 lead in the first on a Holden Klein homer, Lafayette's Matt Bostwick led off with a first-pitch double in the bottom of the inning. Brian Maiken then hit a double to drive Klein in, and Matt Clark hammered a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left center to give Lafayette a 3-2 lead.
North Oakland took back the lead with a five-run fourth that saw them bat around the order. It took advantage of a pair of Lafayette errors and a double by Klein, who was 4 for 4 on the day with two home runs, to push it to a 7-3 lead.
Lafayette tacked on two more runs in the fifth. After Drew Ventrelle got on base with a four-pitch walk, Ryan Cardiff hit a single to left, which brought in Ventrelle. Zach Kramer's single scored Cardiff and closed the deficit to 8-5 before a pair of North Oakland home runs in the sixth put the game out of reach.
