New Moraga-Canyon Bridge Plan Update

A two-lane temporary bridge has been in use since November 2017.

MORAGA, CA — The Moraga Town Council on Wednesday will receive a report on progress toward building a new bridge over Moraga Creek connecting Moraga and the nearby unincorporated community of Canyon.

One fact - the project, on the drawing board since 2013, will be delayed for at least a year, until sometime in 2019, a situation tied to heavy rainstorms in April 2017.

The two-lane Canyon Road bridge over Moraga Creek, built in the 1930s, was on the replacement schedule even before it was rendered unstable in April 2017 by heavy rains that caused the ground along the creek to move.

That movement helped shift a bridge support out of position, making the 1930s bridge unsafe to cross and, for almost seven months cutting off the direct route between Moraga and the nearby unincorporated community of Canyon.

A two-lane temporary bridge opened at that spot in November 2017, and remains in service now. But that storm caused a setback for the plans to start building the new bridge. Construction was originally supposed to start in 2018, but the storm damage to the creek bank required reworked plans. That process has moved the construction schedule back almost a year, to 2019.
