Orinda Sales Tax: Increase, Stay The Same, Or Expire

Measure L was passed by voters in 2013. Should it be allowed to expire in 2022? The City Council is looking at the issue.

LAMORINDA, CA — The Orinda City Council on Tuesday will discuss first steps in deciding whether to extend, or increase, a half-cent general sales tax to pay for road maintenance and other local maintenance and repair needs.

Measure L, a half-cent sales tax approved by Orinda voters in 2013, raises an estimated $1 million a year. It expires in March 2022.

On Tuesday night, the council could ask for recommendations no later than September 2019 whether that Measure L tax should be continued, whether it should be allowed to expire or whether to seek an increase beyond a half-cent.

Revenue from an increase above and beyond the half-cent could pay for drainage improvements and repairs, implementing the community park master plan, implementation of the streetscape plan, improved emergency preparedness, restoration and improvement of San Pablo Creek, road
maintenance and other public improvements and services, according to a city staff report.

Tuesday's council meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Orinda Library Auditorium, 26 Orinda Way.
