Orinda's Meagher Makes the Summit

It took a little more than two hours, left him chafed in a few unmentionable places, but Orindan Steve Meagher made it to the top of Mount Diablo Sunday - all 12 miles of it - and on one wheel.

And at the end of the 3,500 vertical-foot ascent the unicyclist pronounced the ride "fun," thanked his family and called it a celebration of sorts as the calendar ticked off another birthday for him.

Meagher said he was nervous he wasn't going to make the trip, but a cadre of friends and family on hand to offer support saw him through.

"It's a long way," he said.
