As life ebbs and flows, do you bend like a reed in the river or snap like a twig? Resilience is the capacity to withstand stress and overcome adversity. It's also linked to happiness so it's an important thing to consider, especially if you have a tendency for anxiety, depression or anger management issues.
Some are more resilient than others and the reasons around this are complex. But the important thing to keep in mind is that resilience is a skill that can be learned.
Here are a few ways to start boosting your resilience now:
- Build a social support group. People are born and wired to need each other and having one can bolster your ability to bounce back.
- Incorporate positive emotions into your life. Gratitude, appreciation and taking in the good around you can all work to fight the negativity bias we have. Make a daily habit of these practices.
- Work on your "stuff." Prior trauma or adverse family of origin experiences can muddy our belief systems. If you feel blocked by your past, it's time to release yourself.
