Marin Co. Breakdance Group To Compete In Seattle

MARIN COUNTY, CA – A breakdance crew, dubbed "Diamonds in the Rough," from the Roco Dance Studio in Mill Valley, will be heading to Seattle to compete in the largest breakdance competition on the West Coast - Massive Monkees 2017 Weekend on May 19-21.

The Diamonds in the Rough crew was formed in January by breakdance instructor Jeff Wong to work with students committed to taking their skills to the next level and a larger platform of competitions.

The 11 kids, from 10 through 15 years old, passionate about breakdance and the hip hop culture, have spent months preparing for the physically challenging competition that will entail dance, power moves and freezes.

The students also worked to raise money to cover the Seattle travel costs by holding a competition and street shows at the depot square in Mill Valley.

Diamonds in the Rough are invited to perform at the opening event of Massive Monkey’s in Seattle on Friday night in front of thousands of people, and then, over the weekend, will compete against some of the best youth dancers in America, according to the studio.

Two students at Tamalpais High School are dedicating their final documentary video project to the Diamonds in the Rough crew, their chemistry, growth in the past year and their upcoming journey to Seattle.
