Unattended Candle May Have Sparked San Rafael Blaze

A fire in a San Rafael home Saturday may have been started by an unattended candle, fire officials reported.

The fire at 560 N. San Pedro Road was reported about 2 p.m., when a resident reported seeing smoke coming from the roof of a separate cottage on the property, fire Chief Christopher Gray said.

The caller unsucessfully tried to put out the fire in the empty cottage.

Arriving firefighters extinguished the blaze, Gray said; damage was estimated at $10,000.

The cottage did not have a working smoke detector, officials said.
