The San Diego Foundation Names Hal Orr As Chief Financial & Investment Officer

The San Diego Foundation has named Hal Orr as Chief Financial & Investment Officer. 

Mr. Orr, a financial professional, has more than 20 years of experience with both publicly and privately held companies and nonprofits, and 12 years of endowment management experience. For the last 12 years, he was the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer at the J. David Gladstone Institutes, having recently left after the finance functions were moved from Irvine to its San Francisco office. His responsibilities included all financial aspects of the 501(c)3 independent medical research organization affiliated with the UCSF Medical School, having $400 million in total assets, an investment portfolio of $200 million, and annual revenues up to $105 million.

Mr. Orr’s previous work endeavors include his position as Chief Financial Officer, Vice President, and Treasurer at Dentsply-New Image in Carlsbad where he was responsible for all financial and management information system activities for three subsidiaries of a billion dollar, worldwide publicly owned manufacturer.

Additionally, Orr served as Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Operations at LH Research, Inc. in Costa Mesa, a privately owned $40 million designer, manufacturer, and distributor of AC/DC switching power supplies with more than 1,000 employees and serving a worldwide market. His responsibilities included accounting, MIS, manufacturing, purchasing, test engineering, and forecast and master scheduling for foreign and US locations.  Other employers include Receptors, Inc., Torrance, Vanguard Electronics Co., Inc., Gardena, and Rockwell International, Inc., Space Division, in Seal Beach.

In his new role, Mr. Orr will work with the Finance and Audit Committees, senior staff, auditors, and professional volunteers to establish, administer and monitor internal controls, operating budget, cash control, information technology systems and annual audit. He will also work with the Investment Committee, senior staff, auditors, professional volunteers, and outside consultants to establish, administer, and monitor policies related to the management of The Foundation’s investments.

Ultimately, he will serve as the organizational ambassador and liaison to external constituencies on finance and investment-related issues.

Mr. Orr earned a J.D. degree from Pepperdine University, School of Law and a bachelor’s of science degree in Business Administration at the University of California, Berkeley.
