City Releases Final Site Plan for Main Street Promenade

A demolition ceremony Thursday kicked off the $5.1 million redevelopment project.

City officials released the final site plan for the new Main Street Promenade on Monday.

The rendering features a design theme of “Pioneer Modernism,” and promises to create a new downtown park and transit center “Where Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow Meet” with a history walk, public art that uses an optical illusion process called anamorphosis, a plaza featuring a windmill, and a variety of sustainable-energy elements.

A marked the official start of the project by bringing down the south wall of a block of builidngs set to be removed to make way for the promenade. Construction on the park will begin in January, and is scheduled to be complete by next summer.

The is funded in part with $4.5 million in grants from the state infill infrastructure program, as well as smart growth initiative funds awarded by SANDAG. The balance is coming from the city's redevelopment agency monies.
