If you were in our neighborhood today, you might have heard the squeals, laughter, and even a few screams of excitement coming from our preschool because today we made exploding chalk bags! It was beyond fun!
Sophia did prep work with the children, putting corn starch, food coloring and vinegar into baggies. Then she put baking soda wrapped into tissues. We taped down big sheets of white paper and then the fun began.
The children each got to put a tissue full of baking soda into the baggie. Quickly, we sealed the bag up and gave it a good shaking. The children dropped or tossed the baggie on the paper. Then we waited….

The baggies got bigger and bigger and BIGGER. Some popped a hole in the bag, some popped from the seal, and one exciting baggie got a tiny hole. That baggie made a shooting stream of chalky goo!
We were left with a fun piece of art, still taped down and drying in the sun as I write this. The children want me to send it to the art museum because they think it is so pretty. www.MCHLG.com
