Updated: Fires Shut Down I-8 from El Cajon to La Mesa

Heartland Fire is urging motorists to avoid the area because the freeway has been shut down.

The California Highway Patrol now is allowing limited traffic to pass on westbound Interstate 8 through an escort, fire officials said.

Trolley services are now re-opening.

Heartland Fire & Rescue is warning motorists to avoid Interstate 8 from El Cajon to La Mesa.

Fire officials sent out an alert that there are several spot fires in the area and that the freeway has been shut down.
