Reading for Fun and Prizes at the Lemon Grove Library

The Lemon Grove library has many ways to get adults and children reading this summer, including prizes and a very friendly youth librarian.

This summer, young readers can keep track of their hours and win prizes for spending 10, 20 and 30 hours reading. Adults who read four books will win a prize.

For each reading goal reached, participants will receive a prize and get a grand-prize raffle ticket. Some of the rewards being offered are tickets to the San Diego County Fair, Legoland, the zoo and the Air and Space Museum in Balboa Park.

The grand prize raffle will give away gift cards to restaurants and Target, four tickets to see the Padres, and travel items that fit the summer reading theme of “destinations.”

Anyone can participate in the summer reading program. To sign up online, go to the library’s website. Or pop by the Lemon Grove Branch Library and register in person. The last day for guaranteed reading prizes is Aug. 8.

“Just as long as you’re reading,” librarian Wynne Weiss says.

Weiss is working at the Lemon Grove library as the youth librarian through the summer. She has been on loan from Vista since April due to library budget constraints—and she is eager to help children and teens read while school is out.

“Everyone is extremely nice here—they seem to understand the treasure of a library,” Weiss said.

The library is trying to motivate people to use its website, especially the features that let users create their own customized reading list. One of the most popular reading choices in Lemon Grove is the inspirational/ Christian category, Weiss says.

Weiss is more than happy to help library visitors take advantage of these tools, or recommend a book to you.

“I’m old school about a lot of things, but I understand the computer makes things more efficient,” she says.

There’s another reason to come to the library this summer—it's an official cool zone. That means that the library will always have air conditioning, and residents have a cool place to go on hot days.

In addition to the summer reading program, the Lemon Grove library is featuring children’s shows at 3 p.m. every Wednesday through Aug. 10. A full list of events can be found on the library’s calendar.
