$85M Settlement: Livermore Lab Staff Cried Foul Over Health Care
Some 9,000 retirees of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory sued after they lost their University of California-sponsored health care.
LIVERMORE, CA — About 9,000 ex-Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory employees, and their spouses and dependents, will have lifelong health care, thanks to an $84.5 million settlement between the workers and the University of California, which founded the lab, Courthouse News Service reported.
The former employees first sued UC in 2010. They claimed the university promised workers lifelong health care when the lab was taken over by private entity Lawrence Livermore National Security, but transferred them from their university-sponsored health care plan to a pricier and less comprehensive plan from the company, Courthouse News Service reported.
Of the $84.5 million, $60 million will cover health care services not included in the company's plan and $20 million will help workers cover the cost of what they've spent on health care over the past 10 years, Courthouse News Service reported.
