Big Rig Hauling Salami Catches Fire On I-580

The driver was able to escape the blaze and was not injured.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — A big rig hauling salami and frozen food caught fire on Interstate 580 near the Altamont Pass in Alameda County early Tuesday morning. Fire crews from four East Bay departments responded to help extinguish the blaze, which blocked traffic for almost 12 hours.

The fire, which prompted the CHP to issue a Sig-alert, was reported at 3:48 a.m. The driver was able to escape and was not injured. The big rig is a total loss.

Traffic was extremely heavy from Tracy to the site of the crash for most of the day.
