Crews Contain 55-Acre Fire Along I-580 In Altamont Pass

Motorists on the highway experienced major delays as fire crews battled possible arson fires in Alameda County.

LIVERMORE, CA — Fire crews on Saturday contained a 55-acre blaze along Interstate 580 near the Altamont Pass in Alameda County.

The fire was first reported around 7 a.m. Saturday. The blaze grew to 25 acres before eventually swelling to 55 acres, according to officials.

According to the California Highway Patrol, authorities are investigating the blaze as several possible arson fires set over an eight-mile stretch.

Photos and video from the area show flames near the highway and thick smoke filling the air.

At least one westbound lane on I-580 was closed Saturday while crews battled the fires.

Crews with the Alameda County Fire Department, the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department, the California Department of Forestry and the California Highway Patrol are on scene to extinguish the fires and provide traffic control.

Saturday's fire is the second near the Altamont Pass in less than 24 hours. On Friday, a grass fire at North Flynn Road and I-580 was contained to 41 acres, the Alameda County Fire Department said Friday night.

The fire was reported at 6:38 p.m. Eastbound traffic on I-580 was backed up for two miles because of the fire.
