Firefighters Investigate Potentially Toxic Hazardous Spill in Livermore

The mysterious mercury spill was discovered Monday night.

LIVERMORE, CA: Hazardous materials crews are working to clean up 15 square feet of mercury discovered on a Livermore street Monday night.

Fire officials say the spill was reported at 7:36 p.m. in the 900 block of I St. in Livermore. A hazardous materials team was called in to cover and contain the spill, Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Battalion Chief Michael Miller said.

"Elemental mercury is most commonly found in thermometers, thermostats, and other electrical switches," Miller said. "Mercury is toxic and can damage the nervous system, lungs, and kidneys."

Personnel from the California Department of Toxic Substance Control will be at the scene this morning to assist with the clean-up efforts, according to Miller.

"I St. remains open to vehicle and pedestrian traffic," Miller said. "Residents in the area are not affected."
Livermore Police officials have not yet been reached for comment on the discovery.
