LIVERMORE, CA — Approximately 300 people who turned out at the Livermore's Downtown Flag Pole Plaza Tuesday evening to rally in support of impeachment proceedings targeting President Donald Trump were not disappointed. The U.S. House of Representatives voted Wednesday night to impeach the president on charges of abuse of power and obstructing Congress.

The Livermore rally, purposely held the night before the Democrat-controlled House was expected to impeach the nation's 45th president, was one of more than 600 rallies organized across the country by liberal organization MoveOn.org.

Trump is the third president in U.S. history to be impeached.

The articles of impeachment will next head to the Republican-controlled Senate for consideration. The Senate gets the final say, so it's unlikely Trump will be removed from office. Still, Livermore protesters sought to put pressure on lawmakers.

Among the speakers at Tuesday night's rally were Livermore Mayor John Marchand; former Pleasanton City Councilmember Cheryl Cook-Kalio; Maodan Tohouri of Students for Social Change-Amador Valley High School; Ward Kanowsky of Indivisible East Bay; and Mary Perner of Livermore Indivisible. A letter from Livermore Councilmember Trish Munro was read aloud.
