Las Positas College Announces Forensic Science Lecture

The 7th Annual Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)/Las Positas College (LPC) Science and Engineering Seminar theme for 2016 is "Theory to Practice: How Science Gets Done." As part of this program, the public is invited to attend a free presentation on the topic of "Forensic Science in Crisis-How Proteins Can Help" on Thursday, November 3 at LPC.

This compelling lecture offers broad appeal to many---from fans of the NCIS television show, to students, career law enforcement members, and anyone interested in learning more about the most cutting-edge advances in the field of forensics.

Presented by Dr. Brad Hart, Chemist and Director of the LLNL Forensic Science Center, and Dr. Deon Anex, Physical Chemist at the LLNL Center, the free lecture will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. in Room 2420 (in Building 2400) on the LPC campus at 3000 Campus Hill Drive in Livermore.

The Forensic Science Center at LLNL is a multi-disciplinary center focused on the development of new, science-based approaches to forensics. Over the past decade, a number of traditional forensic methods have been criticized by the scientific community, raising questions about their admissibility as evidence in current criminal cases, and the validity of previous convictions.

Two leaders in the field of forensics, Dr. Hart and Dr. Anex, will discuss the basis of these issues and describe some of the work currently underway at LLNL to address them, along with an explanation about an entirely new science-based approach to human identification.
