From LPC: Las Positas College (LPC) in Livermore is pleased to report that the college's Student Mathematics League team took seventh place in the recent competition hosted by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC).
LPC student Yaohui Lu was the top scorer, garnering 32/40 or 75% of correct answers in the first round, on an extremely challenging set of mathematical problems. Approximately 85 LPC students participated in the competition held nationwide and recognized at the 43rd Annual AMATYC Conference in San Diego.
"We are extremely proud of the participants of the LPC Student Mathematics League, whose diligent hard work and preparation was recognized in this very difficult national competition against much larger colleges," said Dr. Nan Ho, Dean of Academic Services for Math, Science, Engineering and Public Safety. "The LPC team coaches and math instructors are also to be commended for their time and support, which contributed to our first leap into the top ten for this competition."
The Student Mathematics League was founded in 1970 by Nassau Community College in New York. In 1981 AMATYC assumed sponsorship of the League, which has since expanded to include more than 165 colleges in 35 states and Bermuda, with more than 8,000 community college math student participants.
