Earthquake Rattles Northern California Coast

PETROLIA, CA — A magnitude 4.9 quake struck off the coast of Northern California Friday evening, the United States Geological Survey reported.

The quake struck at 7:41 p.m. almost 60 miles off the coast of Petrolia and was felt more than 100 miles away. It was about 1 mile deep.

Residents reported shaking as far as Whitethorn, Eureka and Loleta, according to the USGS.

It was preceded by a smaller quake closer to shore. At 2:24 p.m., a magnitude 2.6 quake struck 41 miles west of Petrolia, according to the United States Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
