Las Positas College To Perform Evita As Its Summer Musical

Since premiering at London's Prince Edward Theatre in London in 1978, Evita has been performed all over the world.

From Las Positas College: Las Positas College Theater Arts kicks off its exciting 2018-2019 performance season in the outdoor amphitheater with Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical masterpiece, Evita, July 12-15 at 8 p.m.

Set in Argentina between 1934 and 1952, the musical follows Eva Duarte on her journey from a poor, illegitimate child to becoming the most powerful woman in Latin America, touching on her life as an actress prior to her marriage to military leader-turned-Argentine president Juan Peron, and includes Rice and Webber's well-known songs, "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," "Oh What a Circus," "Buenos Aires," and "Another Suitcase in Another Hall."

Directed by Dyan McBride, with musical direction by LPC's Diana Cefalo in partnership with Jesse Sanchez (Hamilton tour), Evita stars Dulce Tovar (Heathers, Chicago, Cabaret) as Eva Peron and a streamlined, 20 person cast of talented college and high school students, and local professionals, including Anthony Pricket, Austin Harper, Celia Reddoch, Charlotte Crespin, Dennis O'Brien, Eryn Pascual, Greg Zema (Che), Ido Weinberger, Jack Petrin, Jeremy Wardle, Josh Lemos, Kody Forbes, Laura Simpson, Mallory Shaffer, Marianne Calub, Patrick Maravilla, Paul Plain (Juan Peron), Sophie Barrera, Veronica La and Zoey Bothwell-Mitlitsky.

Since premiering at London's Prince Edward Theatre in London in 1978, Evita has been performed all over the world, including Austria, Spain, Mexico and South Africa. Its Broadway premiere in 1979 starred Patti LuPone as Eva and Mandy Patinkin as Che, with LuPone's performance earning her the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and Patinkin earning the Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. Evita is the winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical (1980), Best Book (1980) and Best Score (1980), an Academy Award for Best Original Song (1997), three Golden Globe Awards (1997) and the Grammy for Best Cast Show Album (1981).

Evita will be performed at LPC's Barbara F. Mertes Center Amphitheater, 3000 Campus Hill Drive in Livermore. Tickets, $10-$15, are available at www.laspositascollege.edu/thea... or beginning at 7 p.m. on show evenings. Parking permits are $3 and are available in Lots A and B. Exact change is required.

Because this performance is outdoors, audiences are welcome to bring picnic blankets or lawn chairs and are encouraged to dress accordingly for outdoor theater. Food trucks and vendors, including Sweet & Mellow and Waffle Amore, will be available before the show and during intermission.

LPC's 2018-2019 performance season will continue with a season of Tony Award winners starting with Tom Stoppard's masterpiece on love, mathematics and truth, Arcadia, in October and followed by the 1920s musical parody, The Drowsy Chaperone and a family-friendly and sensory-sensitive children's theater production, which will be announced in October.
