Letter: Livermore Education Association Endorsements

The Livermore Education Association teachers' union on which LVJUSD candidates they endorse and why.

LIVERMORE, CA — The following is a letter to the editor written by the Livermore Education Association. If you would like to voice your opinion on local matters, email editor Michael Wittner at michael.wittner@patch.com.

The Livermore Education Association (LEA) proudly endorses Craig Bueno, Steven Drouin, and Emily Prusso for the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District’s Board of Trustee positions on the November ballot.

This will be Craig Bueno’s third term on the Livermore School Board. During his tenure some achievements include new and updated facilities thanks to Measure J, the installation of solar power at many sites saving the District $800,000/year and the implementation of the YouthBuild program. Bueno is a long time Livermore resident, all three of his adult children have graduated from our schools and have gone on to successful careers. Bueno currently serves as a volunteer football coach at Granada High School. Craig Bueno stated his top three goals during his term in office are to continue the improvement to student facilities, to build partnerships with community organizations bringing educational opportunities to students and to improve measurable educational outcomes.

Steven Drouin is a parent of two Livermore students and the husband of a Livermore teacher. He taught high school history for nine years before becoming a professor at California State University, Stanislaus where he teaches current teachers. Drouin’s skill set and knowledge base will bring valuable insights to the Board. Drouin’s top goals include the growth of research based educational practices, investing in resources so ALL students can be successful, and providing pathways for all students to become productive citizens through college, trades, or wherever their path may take them.

Emily Prusso is a hard working parent who also helps to manage her husband’s construction company. This will be Prusso’s second term on the Livermore School Board. Prusso is a supporter of emotional, social and mental health and is serving on the Health and Wellness Committee. Prusso also supports career technical education, serving as the chairperson of the ROP board. In her next term, Prusso is looking forward to closing learning gaps in reading, math and science, implementing instruction for life skills such as practical math, and ensuring students develop critical thinking skills.

Teachers in Livermore confidently back Craig Bueno, Steven Drouin, and Emily Prusso who all consistently maintain a student-centered focus for their goals and are the most knowledgeable candidates with regard to the responsibilities of a school board trustee.

LEA represents the 700+ teachers, counselors, nurses, speech pathologists, and psychologists in the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District, and we stand united in supporting Livermore students and these candidates.
