The City of Livermore was awarded $359,000 from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) to improve and construct elements that will increase student safety and encourage walking and biking to Marylin Avenue Elementary School. The Safe Routes to School project was one of 10 Bay Area projects selected by the MTC from a pool of 127 grant applications.

“As a neighborhood school we encourage our students to walk or ride their bicycles to get to school,” said Alberto Solorzano, Principal at Marylin Avenue Elementary School. “We are thrilled with the extensive upgrades to our campus and neighborhood that will ensure our students travel safely to and from school.”

Construction is slated to begin in the summer 2016.

The improvements at Marylin Elementary Avenue School are part of the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District’s participation in the National Safe Routes to School program. The City of Livermore applied for the Active Transportation Program grant to support the creation of strong school communities and encourage healthy choices for its children. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission is the transportation planning, coordinating, and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
