Livermore Good Samaritan Saves Life Of Elderly Man Through CPR

LIVERMORE, CA — A Livermore resident was honored by the police and fire departments for performing emergency CPR on an unconscious man, helping to save his life.

On April 3, Bilal Shahid was driving eastbound on Alden Lane when he saw Billy Kiyabu, a grandfather of three, lying on the sidewalk, according to Livermore police. Shahid got out of his car to check on Kiyabu, and saw that he wasn’t breathing. He called 911, and with guidance, began chest compressions, even though he had never performed or trained in CPR.

Emergency paramedics arrived and took over for Shahid. In the ambulance en route to the hospital, Kiyabu regained a pulse. Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department Captain Todd Rueppel said that Kiyabu might not have survived if Shahid hadn’t initiated early CPR.

“This is the perfect outcome,” Captain Rueppel said in a statement. “Community CPR, early activation of 911 and the rapid response of fire, police and paramedics all working together.”

Livermore Police will recognize Shahid at the Livermore City Council meeting June 13.
