Livermore nonprofit celebrates doing good while going green

Food bank and community garden celebrates partnership to promote the connection between waste reduction and local food security.

Last month, Livermore community members celebrated Big Heart Wellness Center and StopWaste’s work highlighting the connection between waste reduction and local food security.

A local food pantry and community garden located in Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, Big Heart Wellness Center is not only working to provide food to Livermore residents, but also to make sure food scraps aren’t wasted.

In partnership with StopWaste, the Center is promoting the importance of keeping food scraps out of the landfill by placing them in the curbside green bin.

During December’s celebration, Livermore community members got a taste of the partnership by participating in sorting games and touring the Big Heart garden. All under the backdrop of the Center’s beautiful mural illustrating the role of compost in growing healthy food.

With the support of StopWaste’s community action grants, Big Heart Wellness Center is educating the Livermore community about the importance of composting and recycling through workshops with the food pantry community. The Center even takes education to the next level by showing firsthand how compost helps create water-conserving soil in its own community garden – the garden that in turn provides seasonal, organic produce for Livermore residents in need.
