Livermore Public Library To Host Conversation On Empathy

Livermore Public Library will host its first Living Room Conversation, a guided
interactive conversation designed to help citizens increase understanding, reveal common
ground, and seek solutions, on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
This program will be held via Zoom. Space is limited and registration is required. To
register, please call (925) 373-5505. Registered participants will receive a Zoom link a few
days prior to the event.

Empathy goes beyond concern or sympathy. Empathy is stepping into the
shoes of someone else with the intention to better understand and feel what they
are experiencing. Empathy is expressed in the choice to be fully present with
someone and listen beyond their words for their feelings and unmet needs.
Knowing that at least one other person ‘gets what I’m going through’ is the gift of
empathy. The power of empathy can bridge ‘us versus them’ perceptions and lead
to new solutions, improved relationships, better strategies for social change, a
reduction in loneliness, and realization of people’s shared human needs and oneness. This conversation is about sharing experiences and observations of empathy.
During the program, facilitated by Librarian Paul Sevilla, participants will discuss
the topic in three rounds of conversation. During each round, participants will select from a
set of questions designed to encourage dialogue. Participants may access the discussion

Living Room Conversations is a non-profit organization formed in 2010 that
provides an easy structure for engaging, friendly yet meaningful conversations. All are
welcome to register and participate in this civil, round robin-style conversation. Visit
