Livermore School District Honored by Alameda County Public Health Department

LIVERMORE, CA: The Immunization Program of the Alameda County Department of Public Health has recognized the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) for outstanding immunization rates. All Elementary Schools received the highest possible rating of ‘Community Immunity Honor Society’ indicating kindergarten immunization rates of 95%-100%.

“This recognition is a testament to the hard work of all of our nurses and the entire Health Services team,” says Scott Vernoy, Director of Student Services for the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District. “Student safety is of paramount importance and we are pleased to receive this recognition at each of the District elementary schools.”

“The LVJUSD School Nurses (Cat Arthur, Shelley Casey, Carolyn Reggiardo, Laura Curran, and Julie Howard) are proud of our District's achievement in reaching an ‘A’ rating with Alameda County Public Health Department this school year. By partnering with our Health Techs, Nola Rechtin, Kim Adams, Denise Roberts and Penny Corso, we were able to achieve this highest recognition. We are so pleased with the cooperation and effort of parents and staff to achieve this immunization rating, which then benefits the entire community,” says Julie Howard, Credentialed School Nurse.

On January 1, 2016, SB277 went into effect statewide and changed the guidelines for immunization in public schools: the only type of exemption that is now accepted for a child missing immunizations is a medical exemption, which must be signed by a physician (personal belief and religious exemptions no longer apply).

In response to the new legislation, the School District has updated Board Policy to align with the new law and has conducted increased parent education and personal contact to answer questions, and communicate the importance of immunizations.
