LIVERMORE, CA — Learn more about Mony Nop, a realtor and former Livermore police officer running for mayor.
1. Why are you running for mayor?
I am running for Mayor of Livermore to give back to the community that gave me so
much. I would like to lead our city in a vibrant path forward, making sure all residents
are represented, heard from and included. My vision for Livermore includes increasing
public safety, providing more access to affordable housing, helping businesses,
mitigating homelessness, and bringing high paying jobs to Livermore. My life has always
been dedicated to serving others, so I hope that you will give me the opportunity to
serve you and our great Livermore community. When elected, I will be donating my
entire salary to four nonprofit organizations for the next two years.

2. What do you think is the biggest challenge facing Livermore?
Currently, Livermore’s biggest challenge has to do with leadership and whether or not
the City wishes to move forward or whether it wants to continue turning to the same
former leaders that created many of the issues that we deal with today. I am the
candidate of Livermore’s future.

3. How do you intend to address it?
As Mayor, I will represent the kind of responsive and collaborative leader needed to
mend many of the divisions that currently exist in the community. Without authentic
engagement and consensus from residents and stakeholders, it is impossible to move
any agenda.
4. What should be done to solve the affordable housing crisis?
We need MORE affordable housing so our teachers, Firefighters, and police officers can
live in Livermore, the community they serve. We need MORE affordable housing in
locations that respect our resident’s concerns and that make sense for our
neighborhoods and our City.
5. What do you think the city can do to maintain water security?
As mayor, I will start by educating the public and asking them to conserve water in all
that they do and offering incentives when they do conserve. Adapting to a future of
climate change and water scarcity will require innovation and collective action from the
community. The City can lead by example in terms of maintaining energy-efficient
buildings and switching to native and low-water landscaping. In terms of vital
infrastructure, I will work collaboratively with the county, state, and federal agencies to
ensure that conservation strategies across industries become the norm.
6. What can the city do to help its downtown and small businesses?
Small businesses face many challenges these days. They represent what is best and
unique about our community. As Mayor, I will work with small business owners to
establish a Small Business Subcommittee to craft solutions to help all business owners
so they can stay open as we emerge from the pandemic and transition into our new
normal.
7. What is your idea of responsible development?
Responsible development works to address the issue of affordable housing and includes
community concerns in good-faith. It is not forever fighting over a single project because
it is not perfect, nor is it growth at-all-costs. Importantly, responsible development
balances local concerns while addressing the regional issues around affordable housing.
8. What other issues are important to you?
As a retired police officer – I hold the safety of Livermore residents close to heart. We
enjoy a quality of life in Livermore that residents hold dear and I will pursue programs
that ensure that sense of community, safety, and comfort. I would like to see more tech
tools incorporate into the city, balancing growth while maintaining our small town feel,
and inspire the youth to be part of the political process.
9. If applicable, what is your political party?
I am registered as a Democrat.
10. How long have you lived in Livermore?
I have worked in Livermore since 1995 when I was hired as a Livermore police officers
and moved to Livermore in 2004.
11. If you didn’t grow up there, what brought you to the city?
The Livermore community gave so much to me. December 4th, 1995 was the day I was
hired onto the Livermore Police Department, a day that forever changed my life. I was
born in the Killing Fields of Cambodia and grew up in poverty in nearby Stockton – my
life story is the American Dream. Running to be the next mayor of Livermore is about
giving back to the community that gave me so much.
12. What experience do you have serving the community?
Serving and assisting others is important to me. I have a long history of volunteering in
our community, from being a 4th grade soccer coach, an 8th grade basketball coach at
Mendenhall Middle School and the Mini Grant Chair for my Rotary Club. I co-founded
the East Bay Entrepreneurs Circle to help people establish successful businesses and the
Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance, bringing nonprofits together and helping them to
collaborate and grow their organizations. In 2015, I served as President of the East Bay
Chapter of the Asian Real Estate Association of America and in 2020, I served as the
National Public Policy Committee Chair for this amazing organization. Our mission is to
help increase homeownership among AAPIs and other minority groups.
13. Of which accomplishments are you most proud?
I am most proud of raising my children as a single father and serving with distinction and
honor on the Livermore Police force for seventeen years, starting my own real-estate
business in downtown Livermore, and helping to grow the nonprofit community in
Livermore today.
14. What is your education?
I received an A.A. degree in Criminal Justice from San Joaquin Delta College and a B.A.
degree in Business Management from St. Mary’s College.
15. Tell us about your family.
I am a father of two young men, a grandfather of a 3 year old, and I am happily married
to a wonderful partner in crime for 8 months.
16. What is the best advice you ever received?
Always be grateful for all that you have, stay positive and surround yourself with great
people who push you to achieve your greatest potential. Stay away from the naysayers!
17. Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?
I want voters to know that my office as Mayor will always be open to them, responsive
to their needs and concerns and I will include them in the process of creating a
prosperous, future Livermore. I will roll up my sleeves to work side by side with our
community and I will always serve with utmost integrity and transparency in all that we
do.
