Porsche Driver, Chocolate Lab Killed in Fiery Crash

Update:

A man and a dog were killed in a collision involving three cars on a wet road in unincorporated Contra Costa County this morning, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Officers responded to a report of a collision on Vasco Road about a mile north of the Contra Costa and Alameda county line shortly before 10:30 a.m., CHP Officer John Fransen said.

Witnesses said a man was erratically driving a Porsche north on Vasco Road where he lost control of the car and ended up on a southbound lane, according to Fransen. The Porsche sideswiped a black BMW sedan and was broadsided by a Toyota Scion, the spokesman said.

The Porsche driver was partially ejected from his car and succumbed to his injuries at the scene, Fransen said. He was only identified as a man between 30 and 40 years old, according to Fransen. The Contra Costa County coroner’s office was called to the scene, he said. The man’s name has not been released pending notification of his next of kin.

A chocolate Labrador was also inside the Porsche and died, he said. The driver of the Scion was able to escape from the car before it was engulfed in flames, Fransen said.

The Scion driver suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a hospital, he said.

A man, woman and their 22-month-old son properly restrained in a child safety seat were inside the BMW and were not injured in the accident, according to Fransen.

Investigators have not determined if alcohol or drugs was a factor in the collision, he said.

A Sig-alert was issued at 10:50 a.m. and the roadway reopened shortly after 1 p.m., according to the CHP.

Any witnesses to the collision are asked to call the CHP Contra Costa area office at (925) 646-4980.

A Sig-alert was issued and there is no estimated time of when the roadway will reopen, according to the CHP.
