School District Opens Satellite Elementary Campus for 300 Former Livermore Valley Charter Students

The district quickly hired 14 teachers for the ad hoc elementary school campus.

LIVERMORE, CA — Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District opened a new satellite elementary campus today in order to accommodate more than 300 former of Livermore Valley Charter School students. Principal Scott Vernoy said both the staff and students were excited about the new location.

“The feeling here all day has been incredibly positive. We are looking forward to a great year,” said Vernoy. Transitional Kindergarten teacher, Laura Morgan says, “It is wonderful to be here and serve the children of Livermore.”

District officials said the campus, which has 305 students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade, was opened due to a recent surge in enrollment of students who previously attended the embattled Livermore Valley Charter School.

Vernoy said he already has begun “to create a school where staff is valued, parents are welcome, and students are engaged and excited about learning.”

“The teachers are creating class lists, placing students in classrooms with their former teachers, if possible,” Assistant Superintendent Chris Van Schaack told Patch. “Those lists will likely be finalized on Wednesday. We decided to wait a couple days so that we could accommodate changes in enrollment.”

The district quickly hired 14 teachers for the ad hoc elementary school campus.

“Students in grades sixth through eighth who are requesting transfer will begin in their new schools on November 28,” Van Schaack said. “Those students are being given the option of East, Christensen, or Junction. At this point it appears that we have about 65 who will be transferring into our middle schools.”

Officials say the mission of the school district is to prepare students “to contribute and thrive in a changing world.” Vernoy says the campus will follow the District’s mission, “by creating a learning environment that fosters the social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth of students.”
