Woman's Death In Livermore Sparks Online Petition
The petition calls for greater lighting citywide following the Aug. 4 death of 26-year-old Yaneli Morales.

LIVERMORE, CA — An online petition has been launched calling for more streets lights across Livermore following the death of a 26-year-old woman who was struck and killed in the city earlier this month.
Livermore resident Yaneli Morales died after being hit Aug. 4 on East Avenue around 8:43 p.m. She was trying to cross in the 3800 block and was not using a crosswalk, according to Livermore Police Sgt. Steve Goard. The driver cooperated with police; DUI and/or speeding were not factors, Goard said.
"On August 4,2019 we lost a member of our family ...," the online posting titled "Petition for Enhanced Public Safety Now" begins. The petitioner admits Morales wasn't in the crosswalk, but said she wasn't far from it and lighting in the area is "horrible."

"While I think more than just lights should be implemented, this is a start and not just for this street but for the whole city and other busy traffic streets in Livermore," the online petition reads. The posting also calls for flashing crosswalk lights and a more visible speed limit sign.
"This is something that I believe has to get done right away so no other families have to mourn the loss of a loved one ...," the post continues. "I feel an obligation to fight for this petition because I believe Yaneli's death should have something positive come out of it. Having that said please I urge you to help me, help us have a safer Livermore like I remember it was once."
