PLEASANTON, CA — Zachary's Chicago Pizza, a pizzeria with unique pies not to be confused with “Sicilian-style," “stuffed crust” or other “deep-dish” varieties, will mark its Pleasanton grand opening Friday, with a portion of proceeds earmarked for Pleasanton Partnerships in Education Foundation.

Twenty percent of sales from the eatery's Sept. 10 opening on Main Street will be donated to PPIE, a non-profit supporting Pleasanton schools, students and teachers.

Zachary's was founded in 1983 in Oakland's Rockridge neighborhood by two Wisconsin transplants, Zach Zachowski and Barbara Gabel, who shared a love for Chicago-style “deep-dish” pizza.

But drop your "Chicago-style" expectations as Zachary’s says its stuffed Chicago-style pizza "is something else altogether."

Crafted with a thin layer of house-made dough tucked into a deep-dish pizza pan, Zachary's pie then is filled with cheese and toppings, then covered with another thin dough layer, and topped with tomato sauce and slowly cooked.

A "Thin Style" pizza also is an option, with dough rolled to moderate thickness and dusted with cornmeal.

And if you need more convincing of its pizza tastiness, check out the business' multiple awards here.

After its grass-roots beginnings, Zachary's now operates restaurants in Rockridge, Grand Lake in Oakland, Berkeley and Pleasant Hill.

The planned Pleasanton locale actually was announced when the San Ramon site closed in July, due to lease-renewal issues.

"Fifteen years ago, we opened our third location in San Ramon," the company said. "We felt so warmly welcomed, and it was an amazing and exciting time as we found our feet and began serving in our new community. Sunday, July 25th was our last day of service there before we begin our relocation to Downtown Pleasanton.

"It is such a bittersweet time for us, but one also filled with joy, excitement and gratitude to our San Ramon community, who we hope to see down the road in Pleasanton!"

The Pleasanton menu includes such specialties as: "Carne," with Italian sausage, pepperoni, salami, bacon and mozzarella: "Spinach & Mushroom," spinach, mushrooms and blend of three cheeses and spices; "Super Veggie," zucchini, yellow squash, corn, broccoli, red bell pepper, cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese on a wheat crust; and "Chorizo Special," Mexican chorizo sausage, green chilis and Monterey Jack cheese.

Salads and starters also are on the menu, and the pizzeria offers a take-home "Half-Baked Pizza," — a pizza half-baked to finish cooking at home.

Zachary’s in Pleasanton will be at 337 Main St. (925) 600-0089. Website and menu selections here or follow along on Facebook at Zachary's Chicago Pizza.
