31 Long Beach Teachers Earn National Certification

Thirty-one teachers in the Long Beach Unified School District recently earned National Board Certification, the highest professional distinction in teaching.

More than 180 teachers here have earned the honor over the years. The rigorous certification is a year-long process that involves submitting portfolios, videotaping classroom instruction and participating in a day of written exercises. National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification is the nation's only advanced teacher certification.
The newest nationally certified teachers and their work sites are Nooshin Baran, Signal Hill; Jennifer Barragan, Harte; Bronagh Byrne, Sato; Shawdee Ghavimi, Mann; Stacey Hess Pettersson, Poly; Leigh Huesmann, Lafayette; Josiah Jones, Wilson; Vanessa Kennelly, Signal Hill; Jennifer Nolan, Lindbergh; Richard Ross, Avalon; Adara Ryan, Marshall; Leslie Theobald, Hughes; Bryant Ton, Lakewood; and Anne Yoon of Tincher, Gompers and Gant.

Teachers who recently earned renewal of the certification are Lindsay Bobo, Lakewood; Alicia Carmona, Visual and Performing Arts; Jessica Cohen, Franklin; Yolanda Darrington, Webster; Anthony Dao, Wilson; Stephanie Ewing-Warner, Poly; Lisa Hickman, Poly; Dalis La, Stanford; Jamie Nichols, Tucker; Maya Oliver, Grant; Danielle Sawyer, Poly; Laura Strand, Tincher; Mikki Smith, Lincoln; Alan Van Divort, Jordan; Henry Waddles, Stanford; Gillian Waldenfels, Millikan; and Jason Wilson, Millikan.
The newly certified teachers are scheduled to be honored at the Board of Education’s regular meeting on Feb. 20.
National Board Certification can offer license portability and can contribute to continuing education units for educators statewide.
