1. 15-Year-Old Arrested In Fatal Long Beach Shooting Of Teen (patch.com) — Long Beach residents are learning more about a deadly shooting that left a 15-year-old boy dead near Cedar Avenue and Plymouth Street on May 28. Police say another 15-year-old was arrested the next day in Lakewood, booked at Long Beach Jail, and transferred to juvenile hall on suspicion of murder and firearm possession. Detectives are still investigating the motive and are asking anyone with information to contact Long Beach homicide investigators or Crime Stoppers.
2. Long Beach's summer reading program is growing; here's how to join and prizes you can win (lbpost.com) — Long Beach Public Library’s summer reading program returns this month with prizes like restaurant vouchers, minigolf passes and discounted Aquarium of the Pacific tickets for kids, teens and adults. Registration opens June 13 at all 12 branches or online, with points earned for reading, programs and creative challenges, plus a kickoff day packed with free family performances at three library locations.
3. Belmont Plaza Pool breaks ground, expected to finish construction by 2028 (sigtrib.com) — Long Beach has officially broken ground on the $105 million Belmont Plaza Pool, a new 50-meter aquatics complex expected to open in spring 2028 ahead of the LA Olympics. Funded partly by new coastal parking meter fees, the facility will host community swim programs, major competitions, and Olympic events, continuing the city’s long aquatics legacy for future generations.
4. Road-raging driver points gun at family stopped next to him, LBPD says (lbpost.com) — Long Beach police say they’ve arrested a man suspected of pointing a handgun at a family stopped beside him at a Magnolia Avenue red light in late April. Investigators used a partial license plate and cellphone video to identify the suspect, who was booked on multiple firearm-related charges and is being held on $30,000 bail.
5. Sharon Robotics Team Earns First Place Award at Competition (businessjournaldaily.com) — Long Beach recently hosted the First Lego League Western Edge Invitational, where a Pennsylvania student robotics team captured the top Core Values Award. The event brought together 88 teams from around the world to compete in robot challenges, teamwork, and innovation, highlighting Long Beach as a hub for youth STEM competitions.
