Search Suspended For Dad Who Jumped From Long Beach-Bound Cruise Ship (patch.com) — Long Beach readers are learning that the Coast Guard has suspended its search for a Redlands father who jumped from a Carnival cruise ship returning to the city. Authorities from the Los Angeles–Long Beach sector coordinated a massive air and sea effort before halting operations pending new information, while the incident and circumstances surrounding the jump remain under investigation.
   

2. Long Beach Declares Local Emergency Ahead Of El Niño Winter (patch.com) — Long Beach officials have declared a local emergency to prepare the city for a potentially historic El Niño winter, just weeks after Hurricane Marie's waves flooded Peninsula homes and damaged coastal infrastructure. The move lets the city quickly secure resources, reinforce vulnerable shoreline areas, and coordinate with state and federal agencies while urging residents to take the coming storm season seriously.

Join ELGL at ICMA, 7:30am on Monday, Oct. 19 (elgl.org) — An early-morning meetup is planned at Long Beach Civic Plaza on Monday, Oct. 19, where attendees can grab coffee at Container Coffee and snap selfies at City Hall. Gunman arrested on suspicion of shooting woman to death during argument, police say (lbpost.com) — A 46-year-old Long Beach man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering 31-year-old Madison Coldiron during an early-morning argument on a Central Long Beach sidewalk earlier this month. Police say the shooting happened on Long Beach Boulevard near 19th Street, and investigators do not believe the suspect and victim knew each other beforehand.
   

5. A California frog is on the brink of extinction. Long Beach's aquarium has a plan to save it (nbclosangeles.com) — Long Beach's Aquarium of the Pacific is quietly raising and releasing more than a thousand endangered mountain yellow-legged frogs, helping rebuild wild populations after fires and disease nearly wiped them out. Working with zoos and federal agencies, staff in Long Beach rear tadpoles for years, fine-tune mountain-like tank conditions, and test ways to protect frogs from a deadly fungus.
