Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Woman In Long Beach (patch.com) — Long Beach residents are being urged to help police find the driver of a white pickup who fatally struck a woman in a marked crosswalk at Baltic Avenue and Burnett Street Friday evening, then fled east on Burnett. The woman later died at a hospital, and investigators say speed, distraction and impairment do not appear to be factors, asking witnesses to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers with any information.
2. An elevated Japanese Classic Car Show returns to the Southland (patch.com) — Long Beach car enthusiasts can look forward to the Japanese Classic Car Show returning to Marina Green Park on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Organizers promise an elevated 21st anniversary event with featured classic Japanese models, special guest Nissan performance planner Hiroshi Tamura, and tickets starting at $20, celebrating heritage, family, and the global JDM community.
3. Long Beach records its first West Nile virus death since 2017 (lbwatchdog.com) — Long Beach has recorded its first West Nile virus death since 2017, with 41 local cases so far this year and an unusually high rate of serious illness. Health officials urge residents to use EPA-registered repellents, cover up at dawn and dusk, and eliminate standing water around homes to reduce mosquito breeding and protect vulnerable neighbors.
4. 2026 Long Beach Gives raises about $2.6 million for 300 nonprofits, another record (presstelegram.com) — Long Beach Gives just wrapped up its 2026 campaign by raising more than $2.6 million for nearly 300 nonprofits serving residents across the city. From school uniforms and orthodontic care to animal rescue and mental health support, organizers say the real win is helping local groups grow their visibility, donor base, and year-round impact in Long Beach neighborhoods.
5. UC San Diego Drops Four-Set Battle to Long Beach State (ucsdtritons.com) — Long Beach State women's volleyball edged UC San Diego in four tight sets, extending the program's all-time series lead to 12-0. The Beach dominated at the net with a big blocking advantage, while a standout 19-kill performance and strong serving helped Long Beach State stay on top in this early Big West matchup.
