Video Released Of Car Sought In Long Beach Hit-And-Run That Killed Man

LONG BEACH, CA — Long Beach police released video Monday of a car investigators say struck a 65-year-old pedestrian who was hit by three vehicles and killed earlier this month.

Collision Investigation detectives are asking for the public's help identifying the driver and vehicle involved in the Sept. 13 fatal hit-and-run on Pacific Avenue, north of Pacific Coast Highway, according to a Long Beach Police Department statement. The victim was later identified as Juvenal Banderas, 65.

Police said Monday that detectives determined a black sedan with tinted windows and chrome trim was traveling north on Pacific Avenue from Pacific Coast Highway when it struck Banderas. The sedan then turned left onto 19th Street from Pacific Avenue, according to police.

LBPD released video of the vehicle Monday as detectives renewed their appeal for witnesses and anyone who may have dashcam or security footage from the area around the time of the collision. Police did not provide a make, model or license plate number for the sedan.

As Patch previously reported, officers responded at about 7:24 p.m. Sept. 13 to reports of an injury collision on Pacific Avenue, north of Pacific Coast Highway. Officers found Banderas injured in the roadway and rendered aid until Long Beach Fire Department paramedics arrived. He was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The preliminary investigation found that Banderas had been walking east across Pacific Avenue outside a marked crosswalk and stepped into the roadway from the center median. Police said he was first struck by an unidentified white SUV, followed by what investigators initially described as an unidentified dark-colored sedan. A third vehicle, a 2021 Jaguar, then struck Banderas.

The Jaguar driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, while the drivers of the first two vehicles did not stop, according to earlier police information. Monday's update focused on the black sedan and did not provide any new information about the white SUV or its driver. Investigators previously said speed, distracted driving and impaired driving did not appear to have been factors in the collision.
