LONG BEACH, CA — The Aquarium of the Pacific is marking the 50th anniversary of Earth Day with a virtual event geared to kids and adults on Wednesday, April 22.

For the past 20 years, the Aquarium has hosted its annual Earth Day Celebration in April, a weekend-long festival featuring booths and activities. This year, given coronavirus shutdowns and mandates, it will use technology to observe Earth Day and provide a way for the public to connect with ocean science while they shelter at home.

During the online event, The aquarium’s animal ambassadors, including penguins, will make an appearance. And parents, looking for educational activities for kids and teens, can tap into Earth Day-themed interactive classes.

The aquarium’s Pacific Pals characters will release a special episode of their show "The Daily Bubble" to celebrate the special day.

Adults are invited to tune in at 7 p.m. for a live-streamed lecture hosted by Aquarium President Dr. Jerry Schubel, with guest speaker Douglas McCauley, an associate professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
